CFCA recognizes that there are pros and cons to everything. Very few things are all bad or all good. However, the negative impacts of social media far outweigh its positive contributions. Not only are social media platforms designed to serve as echo chambers and encourage social media addiction, but they also collect users' private data that is sold to other corporations and provided to law enforcement agencies to aid in unjust prosecutions. There is far too much evidence that social media platforms target children for smoking, alcohol, and weight loss. Its use - mainly attributed to cyberbullying - leads to severe mental health issues that have caused increasing rates of suicide, particularly in young people. Mis/disinformation, hate speech, and inflammatory rhetoric are allowed to flourish making social media platforms fertile ground for election interference by domestic and foreign entities, mass murder, rape, and forced migration.

Sources are plentiful on the negative impacts of social media, but here are a few to get you started if you want to learn more: Britannica ProCon, Brennan Center for Justice, The Age of Surveillance Capitalism, Some People Need Killing, and Careless People
